Just Bibby and I's Secret project, that we're discussing, nothing to see here.

Bibby's Original Post from eons ago.

Many years ago (dating back before elementary school), I often drew maps of levels for Mario fangames and my own indie game series. One game really took off, and I designed almost 70 good-sized levels for it around 1999-2001. Many years passed before I realized that mere mortals (those of us without super-advanced programming skills) could design playable (sometimes even downright fun!) fangames and indie games using tools like Game Maker and the Clickteam products.

I've been making Mario fangames with GM for about four years now, and while it is pretty fun, focusing on nothing but Mario fangames can be a little limiting. And since the time I discovered GM, I've toyed with the idea of turning some of my old sketches and doodles into a playable game.

Basically, the game I'm talking about is a hybrid of SMB 3, DKC, and Megaman with a touch of Zelda - a generally lighthearted platform game with collectible, equippable weapons with various effects. All enemies and characters are completely original, and since I have literally hundreds of levels already drawn out, level design is pretty much a matter of just adapting them and spicing them up a bit.

This isn't one of those "Make this neat game for me!" threads, as I'm perfectly capable of programming the game and producing the music (some of the songs are already started, in fact), but I'd need a lot of help with the sprites and backgrounds. My art skills aren't that great, and this isn't going to get off the starting grid without some help in that department.

I think we should start developing the concepts a bit more.

I'll post some sheets I've finished once I fine tune a few things.
So heres a style tutorial base:

So far I got the Base sprites for the Frosty enemy done and a base sprite for the zippy enemy.

Enemy list sofar reveiled:

~Frosty, a snowball (approximately one game block in size) with a mildly goofy smile, large eyes (though not quite manga-sized), and small hands and legs. Many enemies are variants on this guy.

~Zippy, a purplish-blue blob that's sort of a cross between the shape of Dragon Quest's iconic Slimes and a chocolate chip. It has small hands and legs and a rather cute face, similar to Frosties, and can spin around to stir up tornadoes.

~Stayel is essentially a green-and-white dragonfly with spikes on his abdomen, and big goofy eyes.

~Totem B. is a zany stackable totem pole section.

~Tirgy is basically a walking yellow triangle that can shoot beams of electricity from its hands and its top.

This could be very cool. If you still need assistance with anything, I could help with something - most likely graphics.

I'll post more information about the levels, enemies, and other details at a later time. Shadow Kami is helping with some of the sprites, but if you'd like to help, you're more than welcome to! Backgrounds would be particularly useful, and we'll need some original music too.
Course clear! You got a card.

As long as Shadow Kami doesn't mind, I would like to help! From the sounds of it, this game will have a lot of content in it, so it would be a very heavy load for one spriter. Besides, I have no projects going on at the moment - just a few sheets here and there for fun.

Just tell me what needs doing.

Sounds good! If either you or Bibby can give me a list or something to do (as well as some plot or concept or something so I know what I'm doing) I can get started.

Also, I'm not sure if this is set in stone, but I've always found it to look a bit weird when the light source isn't coming from the direction that the character is facing. Also, how big is the character going to be? Because this guy is pretty small for a 32x32.

EDIT: So I wasn't totally sure how finalized these graphics were, but I took a shot at editing one of them to fix it up a bit. I haven't gotten around to arms yet.
Personally, I like it, but it's not up to me to decide.

I'm more or less able to sprite, but TBH I still have some difficulty with picking a palette.

That looks better.

Yeah, that is an improvement, and it might smallish for a 480 x 360 game window.

Here's the original gameplan for the game's worlds, only slightly adapted from my age 10 layout:

  • Prairie Land: Mandatory Generic Grassy World. Occasional caves, forests, and lakes.
  • Soggy Land: Other places call it H2O Land or Wa-wa Land (which may refer to babyspeak or SMW-fueled swimming SFX). Coastal world with beaches, shipwrecks, and periodic full immersion. Involves frequent abuse of jet skis, surfboards, and/or rafts.
  • Spooky Land: Haunted mansions, cemeteries, dark caverns, creepy forests. Maybe a sunken ship, too. Always fun.
  • Twisted Land: Smorgasbord of surreal inorganic stuff. Enormous fans, flashing neon lights, giant light bulbs shooting off electricity, lots of keys and giant meanies. Includes upside-down levels and places where your mechanics are messed up. The most promising of the original concepts.
  • Magma Land: Volcanoes, fiery forests, the usual.
  • Quicksand Land: Quicksand (surprise!), totem poles, cacti, heat... and more quicksand.
  • Below Zero Land: Snowy worlds, frosted caves, mountains spiced up with avalanches caused by enemy fighter jets.
  • Frosty Land: A.K.A. Doom Land, full of air battles and the Bad Guys' Base.
  • Top-Secret Land: Indiana Jones-fueled bridges, fortified lakes, untamed jungle wilderness. Bonus world that's tricky to access.

Some of these worlds sound a bit generic today, so some of the alternatives I've considered include Nuclear Land, Hurricane Land, Star Land (which could swap for the final world), Palm Land, an urban world, and a world inspired by foreign cultures. Names are also subject to change.

Sounds good! Are there any tiles done yet and/or Bibby, do you have have any tiles sketched out that you want to see?

Same thing applies for the other enemies and the main character.
