Yeah, It's real. I'm working on my seventh and last installement of my open-source mario engine.

Just make sure people can't use this as a Hello Engine again. You should make a website where people can download and merge them with gmres files maybe some people drop some more mergeables later on. So the engine itself covers the basic Mario platforming, while your engine website includes skin packs and mergeables. If this done properly, it will be kind of like smw rom hack ish so people can't se it as a level editor.

All that sounds great. Be sure to include proper sprites for Yoshi - the Hello Engine is missing a lot of sprites for the Yoshi animations, like when going through doors. I'd also suggest using variables like "hspeed = runspeed" so that you can change Mario's mechanics by adjusting a single variable. This is especially useful when adding items that change Mario's abilities or for adding multiple characters based on a single template.
