I didn't get an error message, but the game stopped doing anything for several minutes, and I had to close the application. It only happened to me once, however.

Either the DLL goofed or it got stuck in an infinite loop for reasons known only to Walruses. Either way, there doesn't seem to be any way for me to fix that. Oh well! Thank you for reporting it.

Lately Miles has been focusing more on adding Batbro than Mario's little dinosaur buddy. On the other hand, I can offer an MFGG Awards update, and I can safely conclude that this game snagged a lot of nominations, and I can expect it to excel in the final voting phase!

Mitchellsuperstar This game should get a Yoshi update!@ShadowKami and interested parties: That problem I speak of (malfunction overdrive) I've found can be traced to this: When a bro grabs a bro that's getting got, the two bros that were already in attack animation are supposed to reset - sometimes apparently it fails to do that properly. This can easily cause problems, since Bro's animation information (frames, speed, victim X/Y offsets, etc) are stored in global arrays. Not all of the animations have certain info, so if a Victim is trying to sync animation with an Attacker and the Attacker suddenly changes animation or resets... yeah. I've put in a good chunk of preventative measures but apparently this is still somehow possible. Still working on eliminating cases where that can happen and not get detected by said measures; though I may have to get rid of a certain feature. --- Edited by: Miles, Feb 3rd, 2013 @ 5:52 pm |

I'm sad to say this, but Miles has gone on hiatus, both here and on MFGG, because of some real-life issues. I think we'll see more of him someday, but I can't make any guarantees.

On the off chance someone feels like doing this:
Do me a favor and tear this game a new one. If there's a chance there's something that I and all the reviewers on MFGG missed, I'd like to correct any such applicable problems in an upcoming project that'll hopefully put this to shame. If there's ANYTHING you don't like, even if it's just a preference-y thing, tell me. Maybe I also don't like it. - KNOWN PROBLEMS - Game-breaking: 1. The Bug. The game will hang and do weird things if certain things happen, which are usually related to Bro interaction. The game either hangs forever or goes into malfunction overdrive. A 100% reproduction case can be done as follows: while a Bro is Bro-surfing with low horizontal speed, they land on top of another Bro. 2. Occasionally a bro will get stuck in an attacking animation with no victim set, causing error boxes to pop up when it can't find a nonexisting variable. Irritating: 1. Dropped draw frames (or screen lag) are incredibly noticeable and common enough to be a problem, even on stronger systems. 2. Demonic Domain's music loops incorrectly, resulting in a very noticeable skip. 3. Sound gradually desyncs. It happens slower on more powerful audio processors, but it's still always there. 4. The flashing Secondary Power meter puts too much pressure on the player to use the Batbro call-in. 5. Sometimes when moving, the camera noticeably jitters - you can see your controlled character rapidly flashing back and forth. This happens. Extremely inconvenient: 1. Attacking priority is not always given to the player, even though it should be. 2. When leaving a bro that's just about to fall into a pit (about 6 frames or less from doing so), the coin gets stuck at the bottom of the screen until you push up to fly back up. Quite inconvenient: 1. Controls have non-preferred defaults and are not changeable. 2. Online High Score system is too slow. (Next project will probably not have them at all.) Slightly inconvenient: 1. Sometimes Challenge texts overlap each other when completed in the same frame. 2. Too little content for too big filesize. (Might actually be a far worse problem in the next project. Oops.) 3. Anti-cheat measures are tripped when the MSI Afterburner On-Screen-Display Server is hooked. (I honestly have no idea why. Won't be a problem next time.) 4. Does not work with ShadowPlay: recordings result in monitor-res video but with the content in the top left with the default window size. (Won't work at all in the next project.) Demotivating: 1. The game gets repetitive fast. As soon as you've seen everything, there's no reason to ever play it again - it'll get boring at a significantly faster rate next time you play, if there even is a next time. 2. There isn't much to unlock. It's possible to unlock everything in a single play. 3. Batbro mode feels tacked on. It's not an unlockable nor a secret, there are no rewards for beating it, and it's buggy. The levels and AI are also not designed with it in mind to a high enough degree, causing some levels to be beatable by just standing in one spot for long enough. Stupid: 1. The only in-game way to delete your save data is to change your name to Miles and press Delete. Even then, there's no yes-or-no box - it just does it and says so. 2. The custom notification/question boxes and pause system are done poorly - they actually cause the game to run at super-high frames per second while they're up. Quit and other window commands are ignored during this period. 3. Most stages in Batbro mode can be won just by standing in one spot for long enough - Bros will eventually throw themselves into pits or start fighting because of getting jumped on too many times by other Bros. Problematic for new players: 1. The F1 help menu indicator is too hidden. It's basically invisible. 2. Controller use is a bit too cryptic in how to get it working. Oversights: 1. Local highest score is still saved and anti-cheated, despite not having it displayed anywhere in the game. 2. Leaving a bro with V is not mentioned in the beginner's How To Play screen. 3. The how-to-play screen can't be seen again without deleting your save file. 4. You can't use the aerial "hold down and attack" move without triggering Batbro by accident unless you use a controller. 5. Using the "hold up and attack" move as Batbro will often lead to accidentally using the ceiling-hang gadget unless you use a controller. 6. When invading a bro that's maybe 5 or less frames from falling into a pit, you'll wind up appearing at the top of the screen. (Actually not a bug but rather an oversight with how bro object disposal and the invasion position-blend mechanic work.) Minor preference-y things: 1. SMW graphics. Misc.: 1. The darkest shade of the red grass in Demonic Domain is still green. 2. The game never was graced with Yoshis or other game modes like I wanted. 3. There are no menu sounds. ------ A lot of this stuff genuinely bothers me, and much of it glares me right in the face whenever I try playing it. Despite apparent near-global praise, I am not happy with how this game turned out and I want to make up for it with something better. Hopefully both me and people that play it will like the new thing - so far with my games it's only ever been one or the other. --- Edited by: Miles, May 4th, 2015 @ 4:29 am |
