So the time has come for the opening ceremony (which most of us won't be watching until tonight's taped broadcast). Is anyone looking forward to the Olympics, or are you all indifferent about it? I don't know if the Games seem quite as big as they once did, but it's still going to be fun. And it's sure going to be a nicer environment than The Glorious Land of the East four years ago.

Looking forward to rain in every outdoor event.

Thinking of sticking to the opening and closing events and the showy stuff like diving, as I usually do, but I've no idea what channels here will show it...

I thought the opening ceremony was a mixed bag. James Bond and Paul McCartney were great, of course. The Industrial Revolution scene was memorable but overly gritty for an occasion that's supposed to be festive. The dancing NHS nurses were cute, if a little too blatantly politicized - and completely irrelevant to anyone outside Britain. The daydreaming musician skit would've been less unfitting for a closing ceremony, but for the opening act it felt out of place. And the teens texting and fooling around on Facebook was dumb, strained, and dragged on far too long, and it flowed poorly into the Random British Pop Hits segment. At least, that's my take.

Today's events have been fun to watch, though. It's nice to see some archery and other sports that never get on TV.

I watched most of that game live. Yeah, there were some strange officiating decisions, especially the "holding the ball too long" call. It is a rule, but it happens all the time and is hardly ever called. Did these calls influence the outcome of the game? Maybe.

Of course, if you want to see really outrageous officiating, watch any of the Olympic boxing events. It was pretty obvious that several matches were rigged, especially those involving boxers from Azerbaijan.
