So, here I am, riding the train from The Hague, where my girlfriend lives, back to my own house in Zeeland.

It was kind of a nice Monday, which is rare for a Monday. The weather was nice, and people next to me where freaking out because they lost their guitar. A nice Monday. Now, I have a card which we use to check in and out, and a subscription to the train, so I can travel whenever I want to wherever I want in the weekends. A big accident happened the previous day (Sunday) which forced a complete shutdown of the railway system. So, I stayed another night at my girlfriend's, and headed home Monday morning.
Halfway on my journey home, a train conductor walked by and asked for my train ticket (or card). I gave my card, and he said I should go and buy a ticket, or pay the legal fee. I said that it's not my fault I couldn't go anywhere last night, and I have right to travel home for free today. It says so on your website. After a pretty long discussion, he decided I could go on without a 'valid' train ticket. Cool.
On a stop near home, we needed to leave the back train wagon and enter the front one, which would continue on to where I live. I got checked for a valid ticket again, but this time by another conductor. Again, a pretty long verbal fight followed, and this one decided I should pay the price of the trip, plus the legal fee. Normal price: € 12,20. Legal fee: 35,00. Total: 47,20. Great...
What do you guys think of this, and what would you guys suggest I should do? I'm definitely not going to pay for this.

You could always document everything that happened and make a formal complaint to one of the train system's higher-ups. Make sure you record all the details and explain exactly why you couldn't leave as originally scheduled.
That said, those prices (even in euros) aren't that bad considering current gas prices.
Course clear! You got a card.
