Rules and Posting Guidelines
  • Be respectful of other people's opinions and backgrounds. No flaming or trolling.
  • Don't post or link to anything that's not "safe for work."
  • Don't share pirated software/movies/music or other stuff that's obviously illegal.
  • Keep swearing to a bare minimum.
  • Don't use this forum to prolong disputes from elsewhere.
  • Be careful when discussing spoilers, especially for recently-released media. Spoiler tags are your friend.
  • Don't bump old topics without a valid reason.
  • Use just one account per person. Alternate accounts will be merged.
  • Talk to a staff member if you see a problem.
  • Have fun.

Legend has it that people who are particularly badly-behaved get transformed into Evil Mutants, who aren't able to post on the forums.

Other Stuff
Tips for New Members:

  • We require admin approval of new accounts. After you first register an account, you may have some limitations on what you can do until an admin activates your account. Don't worry - this activation will take no more than 24 hours, probably considerably less. We'd rather not have to do this, but we've had some problems with particularly aggressive spambots before, and this mechanism prevents spambots from creating a mess.
  • You can change the board theme! We encourage you to try out our different skins in the User Control Panel. The default theme, Lithosphere, is the most thoroughly-tested, and it offers the best experience for smaller screens or slower connections.

Forum Culture:

  • We want this place to be "safe for work" - something that's classy and fun, where you wouldn't feel awkward if your little brother, grandma, teacher, or employer saw you! Talking about M-rated games is OK; sharing graphic violence or stuff that's really risqué or blatantly offensive is not OK.
  • The shoutbox is a bit more freewheeling than the forums. The shoutbox isn't visible to search engines and nonregistered users, but it is still possible for members to read through old shoutbox posts, so be civil and tasteful.
  • We do not prohibit discussions about politics. Our audience should be sufficiently informed and mature to have a respectful conversation about controversial topics. However, politics can be a downer, so don't go overboard bringing up partisan politics.
  • This forum is made by humans for humans. Don't be a spambot! It's fine to share a game or album you're selling. However, we don't allow spam - irrelevant, automated, or distasteful junk posts.

Security:

  • Here's a newly-updated topic about data privacy/security in case you're interested.
  • This forum has been around since 2010, and some links in posts and profiles no longer work. Since it's impossible to test every external URL, we can't guarantee that every link still works and still points to the same site it originally did. If you see an old link that's giving unexpected results, please contact a staff member.

Now we're on Version 1.3. Newly-registered members now see a reminder to check this topic, so I made a few small adjustments to the rules and added a notes section that I think new members would find helpful.

I added a reminder about spoilers.

I removed the reminder to try to use decent spelling and grammar. Modern Internet users are likely to have spelling/grammar checkers enabled on their browsers, and old-school IM speak isn't really fashionable anymore. Still, try to proofread your posts. cu l8r

The new version has slightly less sarcasm, since I didn't want to send the wrong message to new members!
