You're about to make a vital edit to a message board post and the forum goes down.

Not here, I'm speaking of MFGG.

I was just adding a massive load of new screenshots of SPBW. Darn it.

That's never happened before to me, but there have been a couple of times when I noticed a mistake before appending a recent post to my Posts [year].TXT file, and gone back and fixed it.

Also, it seems like the Taloncrossing server's been down a bunch of times lately, especially in the morning.

Both the IPB and the 2010 phpBB forums are still down, and the Wiki's still messed up. But the important thing is that 20th Century Fish is back up!

Kesha: That's actually something I've thought about before - whether there's still a need for the old forums. I believe deleting seven years' worth of topics would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater, as there are some good memories and a handful of useful resources on the old boards, but I've also seen posts people made years ago that I think would absolutely mortify them if they knew were still publicly viewable.

well, ideally, everything useful would be transferred to the wiki or is already there anyway (or posted on the new forums / the site). individual threads are also something that can be saved as html files and hosted elsewhere as well.

I don't think old posts haunting people are really that big of a deal since you can just be like WOW PAST ME IS TERRIBLE or whatever.

but i feel like forums that aren't in use really should be put away after a period of time- yeah give people time to archive things they find important, but past a certain point its probably not worth keeping them up anymore. I think when people join forums, and participate they really don't think "wow this is going to be around forever" and give all control of that sort of thing to the admins (you can delete your own posts or edit them, sure... but there's almost never any easy tool for forums to just delete your account and the posts associated with it like you can with social networks)

and it's not really just with forums either, i mean the wiki kinda has this problem too- i remember one user wanted to delete their own article and did a few times but Joey kept restoring it and banning them- they weren't a banned user or anything so it was really bizarre to see this person's right to their own article about themselves be taken away like that

this kinda stuff makes me weary of a lot of social sites, i mean luckily i've never ran into any trouble personally because of it but that doesn't mean it's something that isn't worth thinking about
