Oh yeah, I remember the AIM days! We had AOL dial-up for about 12 years - my family was just a little late to get aboard the broadband train. The exact estimate varies, but I've seen reports that over 200,000 Americans still use dial-up. That's not a huge number relative to the country's population, but it's still a decent number of folks. I'd imagine many of them are elderly people who don't use the Internet much and stick with what they're used to for getting online, but there are still places where it's hard to get high-speed Internet.
Similarly we had dial up and Windows 98 until like 2008 because, uh, we weren't well off enough for that glorious Australian ADSL 1.
I'm surprised AOL was still offering dial up as recently as this year, considering how cheap broadband is these days. Though I also know a lot of American telco services are monopolised so you have crap service in a lot of places. So maybe it made sense for some people.
I never used AOL the messenger application but knew a lot of forum folks who did. Teen me refused to download something with the word "America" in it.
