Story

W.C. Gentry
There’s no question we’ll have to do away with sports.

Considering the amount of money our government wastes on worthless junk, surely there's someplace else they can make such draconian cuts. Plus, if this happened, I'd have to bring back the Bibbety Football League with games on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

This topic is mostly a test, actually...

Right now this proposal is just for Jacksonville, but in some ways that makes it even worse because it wouldn't look too good if we were the only public school system in the state without any athletic programs. Some other things - almost as extreme - are also being discussed now, including four-day school weeks.

Four-day schoolweeks are bad? You'll have a 3-day weekend!
Anyway, why is the government lowering the budget? Especially for schools, that doesn't make any sense at all!

A three-day weekend sounds kind of nice... but parents might not want their younger kids home alone all the time, and there's also the concern that some of the high schoolers might be more prone to getting into trouble with more free time, especially since we have some pretty bad crime and drug problems in a lot of neighborhoods.

Since most of the funding for public schools comes from taxes on property, and since property values have plunged by as much as 50% in the past five years, there's not as much money to go around, and some painful budget cuts are going to have to happen. Still, though, there's got to be a better way to save money - like cutting some of the truly wasteful spending for the board members and bureaucrats.
