Was given this for my birthday this year. (Which actually isn't until July)
Definitely a fun unit. And you can't go wrong with Pac-man! (My one gripe would be JUST HOW FREAKING LOUD IT IS!!! even at it's lowest possible volume)

I've been getting components to install a Raspberry Pi in this thing. I currently have a 3b+. but thanks to fireball's input, at some point I will upgrade to the 4, and get some serious gameage going.
It didn't take long to get the raspberry pi configured to display properly on the vertical screen.

Part of this is a challenge. My goal is to not install anything that cannot be undone. Being able to reassemble this thing to it's default state is key.

This said, I have researched a bit and found the parts to install the coin door, and get it fully functioning.

These two components cost almost as much as the entire cabinet...Skipping for now, as other commands allow for credits to be added, and this is more for aesthetics anyway. In the meantime, I plan to research a bit further so I might get this a bit cheaper.

Also skipped was the riser block

I'll eventually get one of these. but for now, I don't exactly need it.

The rest I got from eBay.

(Possible further modfications needed to THIS PART due to the shape of the cabinet.) Spray paint and decals should work for making it match the rest of the cabinet.

USB Encoder boards (2)

LCD driver board

https://www.ebay.com/itm/163413002318?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649
Stereo speaker amplifier kit. (I might not use the included speakers) This will also serve as volume control

3.5mm 4-pole jacks [female]. (If I did my research correctly, this will allow me to connect the stock speakers to the new amplifier... although I only actually need one of these.)

As you have likely noticed, a lot of these components are coming from china.
It could be a month or more before I actually get this project started. although all have been ordered.

In the meantime, I have to deal with my long time rival and arch nemesis: Dragon's Lair!
...seriously though, I've never been able to get this game working.

is it possible to give it multiple audio output lines with those extra 3.5mm 4 pole jacks? if it is, you might be able to make a bluetooth audio adapter by running some cable to one of those bluetooth transmitter boxes they make for wireless headphones

So what can be superior when compared with paying out half the price for brand name children?

wow, if brand name children are on sale, maybe i can stop buying all these cheap knockoff children

OK... even I'll admit that the Oakland Raiders' performance might be a valid reason to use the interesting words.

Easily, at the cost of total volume power per active device connected.
I kinda like the Bluetooth idea. That would definitely provide a solution for headphones.

random update:
And yes, this is running on my raspberry pi. You have no idea how freaking long I've been fighting with this thing.

does the rasp-pi use daphne to play dragon's lair, or are there other emulators which you can use?

You had it right the first time. it uses daphne. complete and total pain in the ass to get working, but works well once it's set up

Why Daphne? When doing something technical, I'd much rather have Velma, or maybe Freddie. Though Daphne still probably beats Shaggy here...

I'm sorry - I had to.

I'm gonna have to use that on my boss during coffee break tomorrow.

For anyone who doesn't know the reference with the emulator name though:
Daphne is actually the name of the princess you have to rescue in Dragon's Lair.

Update: Control deck panel just arrived. As predicted, the far left and far right sides need to be trimmed to fit the unique shape of the Pac-man 40th anniversary cabinet. By the time all is said and done, you shouldn't even be able to tell that I did this... especially once this part gets sanded and painted.

This oversight was due to me not realizing the cabinet shape was overall different until after the order was made.
On further shopping however, I might have ended up with this anyway, since for whatever reason, lumber in my area has gone through the d*** roof! In addition to a lack of control panels available for the specific cabinet that I have. I've come to believe that needing to mod this one was overall, inevitable.
