It's a thing.
I am amazed at where it seems to be right now. It's at a point where it can fool most people at the subconscious level, a thing referred to as "presence." Basically, if you're in a VR environment with current tech and look down a virtual pit, you'll feel whatever you feel when you normally look down from a really high place, even if you're consciously thinking about how not real what you're looking at is.
