Bit of a bump here, but I actually have a bit of awesome here.

I don't know how well this game may, or may not have been known in the NTSC-J or PAL regions, but I do know that this game was never released in any of the NTSC-U/C areas, and to make matters worse, it had a region lock, preventing it from being played in any other regions.
Thankfully, this is easily corrected.

It's a shame that there was no way to play this in the US until Emulators, and Flashcarts were created. (And of course, the discovery of the region switch mod)

I am speaking of the game "Alien Soldier" for the "Mega Drive"

Made by the same people who made "Gunstar Heroes" this game utilizes some similar mechanics, weapons, and even some bosses.
But this definitely does not mean that this game is one to disappoint, Oh hell no...

This is a very fast paced side scrolling, platform style, shooting game.
The bosses may be a slight bit *Ahem* obscure, but this game is still among one of the most hardcore experiences I have seen for any Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game.

Now, don't let the game's exceedingly high speed turn you away, because: When the game is set to "SuperEasy" (Really, it has 2 options, "SuperHard, and "SuperEasy") When the game is paused, you can slow the game down.

With 25 levels to play, and a boss at the end of each one, this game can last hours on your first try.
Thankfully, there is no limit to your Continues, It just counts how many times you had to try again on any given level, and lets you continue from the start of that level.

This game also uses a password system to allow you to pick up where you left off.

The graphics and music are great as well.

It's obvious that a lot of time, and effort was put into developing this game.
Hat's off to you Treasure! Wherever you may be now.
It's just a shame that it was never released in my area. (Not like that was going to stop me from playing this piece of total awesome!)

I would highly recommend giving this retro gem a try.
I don't care how you do it, Emulator, Import console, Modded console, Flashcart, I honestly don't give a crap, if you like fast paced games where stuff blows up, you need to try this!

Friendly Dictator

So what can be superior when compared with paying out half the price for brand name children?

wow, if brand name children are on sale, maybe i can stop buying all these cheap knockoff children

OK... even I'll admit that the Oakland Raiders' performance might be a valid reason to use the interesting words.

Looks like a rather large bump this time around.
This time I have a fun gem on the NES that I only first heard of a few days ago.
This one in particular seems almost like a mix of The Legend of Zelda (NES), Blaster Master/Meta Fight (NES) , Metroid (NES), and Strike Gunner (SNES) [No, really, I can't find a better comparison].

This game is titled "The Guardian Legend" and it is one I wish that I had heard of much sooner.
(Note: Video was recorded in Mono, only the right sound channel works)

Your goal is to activate the self destruct sequence on this space station/planetoid to prevent it from colliding with earth.
This place has been overrun with aliens which have killed all of the original inhabitants of this place, and at the start.
Throughout this game you will have to fight off monsters with an array of weapons, ranging from you're standard upgradable gun, to a lightsaber, to bombs, among several others you can buy with the power chips that they are powered by.

There are 2 types of gameplay,
one is an overhead view type, much like in Blaster Master, Where you search for the next corridor needed to activate the self destruct sequence, at which point the gameplay style switches to a game that is much like the SNES's Strike Gunner.
You will find traps much like in Zelda, where you must defeat all enemies (Or a boss) in order to proceed, You're abilities are also upgradable, like in Metroid.

For being on the NES, the graphics and the music tracks are Amazing as well.

I never would have thought that a gem of this quality would exist on the NES.
If you haven't played it, or are like me and never heard of it till just now, give it a try.
I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised.

So,it's been a long while since I last bumped this thread.
2014... man...
Well, one long overdue bump is being made now.

I was digging through the NES games on my X-box, and found one title that I had never seen before. "Captain Tsubasa II: Super Strikers"
So, I decided to have a look at it.
It got as far as the intro, when I realized that this was a soccer game.
So, me having a dislike for most sports games, I initially thought: "Man, this is going to suck!"
Going against my initial thoughts, I gave it a try. And I'm glad I did.
This is one of the best sports games I've ever played. and I've found that it can be compared to Dragon Ball Z of all things.

Some us in America may, or may not recognize the gameplay style.
Only the first game got released here, with some alterations to the characters and storyline.
It was released here as Tecmo cup: Soccer Game.
After trying it as well, I can safely say that they made some major improvements to the game and engine in the sequel, while still keeping the core gameplay system.
Even through the translation errors on the part of the rom hacker, the game's storyline held solid, and kept me interested through the entire game.
Yes, I actually played through this entire game, after initially thinking that it was going to suck to no end.
To top things off, I would suggest that you give it a try, at the very least.

Now, if you are looking for a change of pace with this kind of game, the cheat system can be used for a good laugh.
Hack all the players to LV99, and play the first level... the results are hilarious.

I gave it a try yesterday. I didn't get a chance to play for very long, but it's a really cool concept. I like how it combines soccer, action, and RPG elements. I didn't do too well the first time I played (without hacks!), but considering it's a Japanese NES game, I wasn't expecting it to be a cakewalk.
Course clear! You got a card.

That game can actually be pretty difficult, but isn't too bad once you figure it out.
----At any rate----

Okay, I have something slightly different this time around.
It's actually a fan-game that is still in development, which is based on the Doom Legacy source port engine.
It's also been in development for several years.
And unlike everything else I've posted here, I can actually link you to the site you can download it from.
It seems to be rather popular. Some of you may have heard of it, but for those who haven't:

Sonic Robo Blast 2.

http://www.srb2.org/

It's not often you find a mod that takes the source game, and transforms it into something else.
In this case, they have taken DOOM, and transformed it into Sonic the Hedgehog.
If it wasn't for them being so open about it, (And the fact I've attempted to load actual doom maps into it, and gotten them to load) I might not have ever figured this out.

Apart from having several levels, (Some of which are FREAKING HARD) there is a large amount of user created content.
This adds custom levels, characters, music, and even custom mechanics.

I find this to be pretty cool myself. for this obscure entry into this thread.
