"Why would they pay him that amount money when he's never really done that job? I understand his name and resume carry a lot of weight, but being the GM is a completely different deal than coaching. For all [Jackson's] credibility, I just think [Knicks owner James] Dolan would have been better off paying [San Antonio's] R.C. Buford or [Oklahoma City's] Sam Presti something like $6 or $8 million a year to come in there and really rebuild this organization.
"To me, by hiring Phil, it's just 'win the media hit.'"

Jackson's assortment of ring in every color is result of great players and great coaching. He can pursue half that as gm but it have made more sense to get him running the show on the floor. |

Of course that is right....BUT, Dolan wasn't going to give the reins to Buford or Presti.
Hell, he tossed out Larry Brown and didn't like Donnie Walsh enough to keep him because he dared to talk to the press, which Dolan hates... Dolan isn't a basketball guy and he wants to be the end-stop for decisions, which is his right as owner. However, he's like Jerry Jones... winning isn't in their future while they run the team. Hiring Phil as Pres of operations is like hiring Mike D'Antoni as coach. It probably won't help the team become great but should help them get better. Who knows... maybe Phil is just what the team needs. If they taste a little success maybe Dolan realizes that he isn't a basketball guy...plus Phil will hire disciplinarians... which will help. They may end up running the triangle...but we'll still realize that without Tex Winter Phil's triangle never won anything. |

IMO it's kinda like having Harvard on your resume. Once you have it, no one really questions if you're smart or not... and once Phil is with the Knicks, I see the same thing happening. People will want to play in NY more than ever. There already was a report of LeBron taking them much more seriously now.
