My old TV blew up

Yep. I moved the poor thing out of the horror show of a messy room it once called home and into a place more suitable for it in hopes of having some more time with a certain game on it. The thing had been showing signs that it was going to go sooner or later. (For example: fluctuating and unmuteable volume, randomly super dim screen). It appears that time has come.

I plugged it in and looked at its little green VCR timer light to see if it started cycling like normal. It did, which made me excited because I was hoping it still worked and that itself seemed like a good indicator of just that. I immediately went to go grab something else from that messy room and only seconds later heard a screechy sound that got steadily lower. The noise stopped after a couple of seconds, not too long after which the smell of burnt electronics filled the air. When my dad asked what that noise was, I replied, "I think I dun killt muh TV." He then noted that he thought a bomb was about to go off.

The sad part of it is that the world now has one less device capable of supporting the true NES Duck Hunt experience.

Oh well, everything has its time. Any of y'all lost anything of yours lately?

That sounds like the same experience I've had with terminally ill TVs and computer monitors: the randomly dimming screen, the burnt electrical smell, the unsettling feeling that the broken TV is on the verge of exploding. (The volume issues are a new one on me, though.)

The world does need devices that are capable of the full Duck Hunt experience. We actually played that game a few weeks ago, and I think I lasted until Round 17 or something pretty high. The expressions on the dog's face never fail to amuse.

I haven't had any stuff break in recent times, fortunately. I recently changed the CMOS battery in my Windows 98-era Gateway PC, and when I get a chance I'll lug a monitor over so I can see whether the new battery fixed it.
Course clear! You got a card.

I actually recently lost a 200W stereo amplifier I had connected to my TV for the last several years.

Given constant usage, I'm honestly surprised it lasted this long.

... really? That's what you call Guile?

i haven't borked any of my things recently, but i've lost some stuff in the past

i have an ipod video which died because it got stuck in the washer. it wasn't my first portable audio player, but it was my first ipod

pretty much every console from last generation has failed on me in some way. i've got a phat ds which got its top screen busted after being put in my friend's bag when we were hanging out. i kept that thing for years afterward; i even fixed the broken screen not long ago. my wii's system data got randomly corrupted; i'm not sure that had anything to do with the fact it was modded. i've had at least two 360s get the red ring on me, but microsoft repaired both of them for free. i had my phat ps3's disc drive just up and stop working, but that one cost me $150 to have it fixed

i had a rock band drum set which came with the special edition of the first game break on me, particularly the red pad and the kick pedal. those two things were pretty common failures on those types of drum kits, to be fair

So what can be superior when compared with paying out half the price for brand name children?

wow, if brand name children are on sale, maybe i can stop buying all these cheap knockoff children

OK... even I'll admit that the Oakland Raiders' performance might be a valid reason to use the interesting words.

Get a Sega Genesis.
I have two: a model one (my favorite) and a model two version. Lovely little console, it is.

dude, alls i ever had was the model 2 genesis. my friend chris has a model 1 genesis, though, and i loved that the thing had a headphone port. whenever we used to play mortal kombat, nba jam, or some other arcade-rat game from the early 90s, i'd plug my earphones in on the front of that thing so i could listen to the sick-ass sounds it made

i know a lot of consoles now are compatible with headsets that'll route the audio directly into your ears, but i wish more of them had something as simple as a headphone jack
