This morning Skip Bayless opined that Durant is better than Lebron. Lebron couldn't guard him last night as hes maturing and getting better all the time on both ends of the court. Monk you got to pay attention and forget about guys who played against Heinsohn and Cousy et al.

Tyrone, you keep saying silliness going back to BC for some reason...which is fine but it is what it is and it diminishes the rest

In my opinion the league's defense in the 90s and before was allowed to be far, far more physical. You can disagree... but that would be akin to saying that Shula never won a ring.

Also, 40 points today is no greater than scoring 30 in the late 90s.

Finally, Durants scoring is other-worldly, no doubt... but no player should be considered top 5 when they didn't dominate on both ends of the court.

Durant isn't an elite defender.

We've been down this road a whole bunch. I'll say again, if defense was so good "back in the day" teams wouldn't have been scoring 120 on a nightly basis. End of story soul brother.

Then in the mid-1990s a breed of coaches came along — emulating the Detroit Bad Boys teams — that slowed the pace, promoted physical defense to see how many fouls they could get away with, how they could control the game. The result was isolation basketball, lots of pick-and-roll late in the shot clock, and less scoring. The 1994-95 season the last season that he average NBA team scored over 100 points per game.

By the way sugar tits, if low scoring is going to be how you define eras with good D ... then you better stop sh**ting (censored for your pleasure) on the old eras... because they were much lower than today.

You're playing both sides of an argument here.

You've eluded to that high scoring shows an era of weak D, in which case we are in an era with poor D.

Also, you'll see that in the late 90s the scoring started to drop... as I stated.

2003-04 NBA 93.4
2002-03 NBA 95.1
2001-02 NBA 95.5
2000-01 NBA 94.8
1999-00 NBA 97.5
1998-99 NBA 91.6
1997-98 NBA 95.6
1996-97 NBA 96.9

The last five years.. or this era

2011-12 NBA 96.3
2010-11 NBA 99.6
2009-10 NBA 100.4
2008-09 NBA 100.0
2007-08 NBA 99.9

Not sure what I hope to prove by posting stats... but I like looking up this old stuff... and anyone knows the D in the 90s was entirely better than it is now.

The players...even at their best aren't allowed to be as physical at they were.

Tonight Durant 26 pts. on 10-12 from field, 7 assists. Durant working is way to being best player over. You can go on dissing him Monk, but that's how it is. You just narrow minded cause you picked Oden over him while The Almighty Tyrone had it right with Durant.
